The Sound of Silence: Why I Took a Vow Not to Speak (and Why You Might Want to Too)

Right ladies, this might surprise you: I recently took a vow of silence.
Yes. Me. The woman who’s made a whole career using her voice.
Silence. For a few hours. Not a whisper. Not a word. Not even a hum.

And let me tell you… it was LOUD.

I chose to go ‘quiet’ because sometimes the world is just too noisy.
Too many opinions. Too much scrolling. Too much “How are you?” when you don’t even have time to answer properly.

I needed space.
I needed stillness.
I needed me.

And it turns out, I’m not the only one.

According to a growing trend among Gen Z women, the new wellness move isn’t hot girl summer - it’s vow-of-silence summer. They’re trading Ibiza for monasteries and mindfulness. And us fabulous 50+ ladies? We’ve earned our peace too.

Silent walking. Silent retreats. Silent mornings.

They’re not just Instagram fads. They’re soul resets.
And guess what? Science backs them up.

Did you know that just two minutes of silence can lower your blood pressure and reduce stress more than your favourite playlist. – Healthline

Silence boosts memory. Enhances sleep. And even sparks creativity.
That’s why so many artists and healers retreat into silence when they’re stuck.

But what happens when the talking stops?

You start hearing yourself again.
Your real self. The one that’s not people-pleasing, performing, or pretending.
Just… being.

I found clarity I didn’t know I needed.
Old wounds surfaced. New ideas flowed.
And most importantly I felt safe in my own company.

It wasn’t easy. Silence is confronting.
At first, I kept wanting to check my phone, to say something clever, to fill the space.
But the silence held me. And soon, it healed me by helping me to process my thoughts and intentions.

When was the last time you sat in silence… on purpose?

What might you hear if you stopped filling the space with sound?

Could silence be your next act of self-love?

Want to try it?

You don’t have to fly off to a convent.
Just take a morning off. Leave the TV off. Don’t talk. Don’t scroll. Just be.

Start with ten minutes. Then half an hour. Maybe a full morning.
It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being present.

And ladies, you are everything.

So give yourself permission to unplug.
To be still.
To hear your own heartbeat again.

You don’t need to speak to be powerful.
Sometimes, the strongest voice… is silence.

Give yourself the gift of quiet. Even if it’s just for an hour, a morning, or a full day. Let the world pause so you can hear yourself again! And trust me, you will love what you hear.
