Menopause, Mindset & Mojo: Finding Your Fire Again

Did you know that by 2025 around 1.1 billion women worldwide will be menopausal or post-menopausal, and a projection says that by 2030 the number may reach 1.2 billion. That’s a whole lot of hot flushes, forgotten car keys, and newfound wisdom walking this earth.

But here’s the thing no one tells you: menopause doesn’t have to mean “the end.” It can actually be the beginning of something spectacular. A friend recently confessed that she thought her “spark” had gone out with her last period. She’d lost her confidence, her energy, and (her words, not mine) “the will to wear lipstick.” But then something shifted. She joined a yoga class, cut down on caffeine, and started talking, really talking with other women going through the same thing. Within months, she was glowing again. She found her mojo.

And honestly? That’s the story for so many of us.

Let’s talk about the “M” word

For years, menopause was the big silent no-go topic. Our mothers whispered about it like it was a bad word. But not anymore.

There’s been a real shift from shame to strength. Celebrities like Davina McCall and Michelle Obama have blown the lid off the taboo, showing that menopause isn’t something to “get through” -  it’s something to own.

A global survey by Catalyst found that: 84 % of respondents agreed that more menopause-support is needed at work; more than one-third said their symptoms negatively affected their work; and 1 in 10 said they had declined a job opportunity because of lack of menopause support.

No – it’s not only you who feels this way. Studies around the world are showing women in this stage are experiencing real effects at work from symptoms.  If we don’t navigate this consciously, there can be a career/financial effect. You’re not asking for special treatment. Most women expect and deserve menopause-friendly workplaces.” Knowing these trends means you can advocate for yourself, take the power back, expect support, and make choices about work, mindset, and health intentionally. This is not just a “women’s issue,” that’s a workplace revolution waiting to happen. But here’s the good news: mindset is everything.

Mindset: Your Secret Weapon

Menopause can throw all sorts of curveballs at you including mood swings, night sweats, brain fog, and a sudden urge to throttle your partner over the way he chews crisps.

But your mindset? That’s where your power lives. When your body is changing, your thoughts can either become your best friend or your worst enemy. You can tell yourself, “It’s all downhill from here.” Or you can say, “This is my time to reset.”

And trust me that second one feels so much better.

Studies show that women who adopt a positive mindset during menopause report 60% fewer symptoms. Sixty percent! That’s not magic, that’s mindset.

Finding Your Mojo (Because She’s Still in There!)

Now, let’s talk about that elusive mojo. You know, the thing that makes you feel fabulous, and fearless.

Your mojo hasn’t gone anywhere, she’s just resting. And she’s waiting for you to wake her up.

Here are a few of my favourite little ways to start:

  • Move your body. It doesn’t have to be a gym thing. Dance, walk, swim - just move. Movement releases endorphins, which are like happy little fireworks in your brain.
  • Eat for energy. Think leafy greens, omega-3s, and plenty of water. (Sorry, wine doesn’t count, but I won’t tell if you sneak a glass.)
  • Find your tribe. Surround yourself with women who get it. The laughter, the shared stories, the “me too” moments.
  • Get curious. Try something new – an art class, volunteering, or that trip you’ve been putting off. You’re not done; you’re evolving.
  • Laugh more. Find humour in the madness, laughter really is medicine. Plus, it burns calories. Win-win.

Here’s a fascinating fact: In Japan, the word for menopause is konenki which actually translates to “renewal years.” Isn’t that lovely? While we’re here battling hot flushes and jokes about memory loss, they’re calling it a rebirth. Maybe that’s how we need to start thinking too.

So, where does that leave us?

Menopause might change your hormones, your sleep, even your wardrobe (goodbye polo necks). But it doesn’t change you. It’s not the end of your fire, it’s the spark that lights a new one.

You’re not losing your youth; you’re gaining your power.

So, next time you wake up at 3 a.m. fanning yourself with the TV remote, remember this: your body is not betraying you -  it’s reprogramming you. You’re stepping into a new chapter of wisdom, strength, and, yes, sass.

So, let’s raise a (cooling) glass to that.  Remember your fire never went out; it just needed a little more oxygen. Breathe, smile, and let your new glow show. Because menopause isn’t the end of your mojo; it’s just the start of a fiercer, freer, more fabulous you.
