Black Don’t Crack, But It Does Stretch: Honest aging conversations
Jul 14, 2026
The other day I bent down to pick up a dropped earring – and as I stood back up, my knees made a noise that sounded suspiciously like Rice Krispies. Snap. Crackle. Pop.
I looked around like, “Did anyone else hear that?”
Nope. Just me… and my 50+ body giving me an uninvited soundcheck.
And listen, before you say it: yes, Black don’t crack. That’s the good news. But ladies, it definitely stretches, sags, creaks, shifts, and sometimes even forgets why it walked into a room.
The Truth Behind the Glow
We’ve all heard the saying. “Black don’t crack.” And to be fair – it’s not a lie.
Melanin-rich skin does age more slowly. Science backs us up! According to dermatologists, Black skin ages up to 10 years slower than white skin due to its higher levels of collagen and melanin which protect it from UV damage. Basically, we’re magic. But aging? That still happens. And it’s time we had some real, no-holds-barred, honest conversations about what it actually looks and feels like because the outside might still be glowing, but inside? Sometimes the hips are lying.
What the Mirror Doesn’t Show
I’m not just talking about wrinkles or grey hairs (though I proudly rock my silver coils like crown jewels). I’m talking about the other stuff. The dry knees. The sudden intolerance to wine. The forgetting where you put your glasses while wearing them. Let’s be honest, growing older as Black women comes with a unique blend of pride, pressure, and power. We’re expected to be strong, youthful, stylish, sexy, spiritual, nurturing, fearless, and ten steps ahead of menopause. It’s a lot.
Aging Is Not a Dirty Word
In a society obsessed with youth and let’s face it, youth that rarely looks like us – it’s easy to feel invisible as the years tick on. But did you know:
- Women over 50 make up over 30% of the UK’s female population, yet only 8% of beauty campaigns include them.
- For Black women over 50, the visibility is even worse as we’re often erased from the conversation entirely.
- And when we are visible? It’s usually as the wise auntie or the background character with a one-liner.
Ladies….. we deserve front-row, centre-stage.
Let’s Talk Stretch (and Strength)
Yes, things stretch. Your waistline. Your patience. Your bedtime.
But so does your wisdom. Your courage. Your ability to say no without apologising.
Aging is not just about loss, it’s about gaining unapologetic self-awareness.
Now, am I still trying to remember where I left my edge control? Absolutely.
But I’ve also learned how to moisturise my knees, say yes to naps, and side-eye ageist nonsense like a pro.
Let’s stop pretending that aging has to be quiet, invisible, or shameful. Let’s celebrate our laugh lines (earned!). Our stretch marks (survivor stripes!). Our hot flashes (internal fireworks!).
Let’s talk about hormone shifts, joint aches, skincare that works for us, and the power of still wanting more out of life at any age. Because you know what? We’re not done yet.
We’re just getting started.
So yes, Black don’t crack. But if your back pops when you sneeze or your memory's playing hide and seek! – you’re not alone. You’re not broken. You’re just becoming even more you.
And that, ladies, is something to be proud of. Now pass the collagen gummies, and let’s toast to aging boldly, beautifully, and unapologetically.
Tell me, what’s something you’ve learned or laughed about as you’ve aged? Let’s keep it real and keep it joyful. Drop a comment or share this with your ‘sisters’.
