Perimenopause & Hair Loss: The Hidden Story No One Warned Us About

Mar 24, 2026

Let’s talk about something so many women whisper about, Google at 2am, or quietly stress over in the shower: hair loss during perimenopause.

It can be shocking.
It can be emotional.
And it can feel like yet another thing your body is doing without sending a memo first.

You’re not alone. In fact, one of my closest friends is going through this right now. She called me recently, almost in tears, saying, “Why didn’t anyone tell me this could happen?” And honestly… she’s right. We weren’t prepared. Not culturally, not medically, and definitely not emotionally.

Why is perimenopause messing with your hair?

Perimenopause is a time of shifting hormones, especially oestrogen and progesterone. These hormones don’t just affect mood and hot flushes, they also play a huge role in the hair growth cycle.

When they dip, you might notice:

  • More shedding than usual
  • Thinning around the crown or edges
  • A wider parting
  • Hair that feels finer, drier or more fragile
  • Slower regrowth

And for women with textured hair, this shift can feel even more dramatic. Our hair already needs moisture, patience, and gentle handling so any imbalance can show up fast.

It’s not just biology… it’s emotional too

Hair has meaning. It’s cultural, personal, spiritual.
For many of us, hair has been a symbol of identity, strength, and self-expression. So when it starts changing, it’s more than a cosmetic issue. It can feel like you’re losing a part of yourself.

You might catch your reflection and do a double take.
You might feel self-conscious about styles you once loved.
You may even feel frustrated that your body keeps shifting in ways you didn’t ask for.

These feelings are valid. And you deserve the same compassion you give everyone else.

So what can help?

Think of this stage as an invitation to care for your hair differently, not out of fear, but with understanding.

Nourish from the inside

Supporting your hair from within can make a huge difference:

  • Omega-rich foods
  • Iron, zinc, and vitamin D
  • Biotin or B-complex vitamins
  • Hydration (your scalp needs water too!)

A balanced perimenopause supplement routine like Valerie’s daily essential shots can support overall wellbeing, including hair health.

Protect your strands like the crown they are

Swap harsh routines for gentler ones:

  • Choose low-manipulation styles
  • Avoid tight braids, weaves or ponytails
  • Use silk or satin pillowcases
  • Deep-condition regularly
  • Moisture, moisture, moisture

Your hair isn’t “weak”,  it’s just asking for a different kind of care.

Check your stress levels

Stress can speed up shedding.
Perimenopause can increase anxiety.
Life can feel full-on.

Even five minutes a day to breathe, stretch, journal or sit quietly can calm your nervous system and support your hair, too.

Talk to a GP or specialist when needed

If shedding feels extreme, patchy, or sudden, it’s worth getting medical advice. There may be thyroid changes, iron deficiency, or other treatable causes.

Most importantly: be kind to yourself

You’re evolving in mind, body, and spirit.
Your hair is evolving with you.

This isn’t about losing your beauty.
It’s about rediscovering it in a new, softer, more grounded way.

Your worth isn’t measured by the thickness or strength of your hair. Your power comes from your wisdom, resilience, joy, laughter, and the way you continue to show up even in seasons of change.

And trust me… this is just a chapter, not the whole story.

You’re still blooming. You’re still becoming. And your crown, in whatever form it takes, is still yours.
