Let’s Talk About Dryness (Yes, That Kind Too!)

Let’s be honest. No one really wants to talk about dryness. Not the flaky skin kind, and definitely not the down there kind. But here we are, because if we don’t talk about it, who will?

I was chatting with a friend over brunch (because all good truth bombs happen over brunch), and she leaned in, lowered her voice and whispered, “I think my body’s drying up - literally!” We laughed so hard that the table next to us probably thought we’d lost it. But later, I realised she wasn’t joking. She was serious, and she’s not alone.

Ladies, as we glide gracefully, and sometimes grudgingly, through our 40s, 50s and beyond, our bodies start changing in sneaky little ways. Skin gets drier. Hair loses its bounce. And yes, even our intimate areas decide to hit pause on moisture. It’s not glamorous, but it’s natural.

According to the British Menopause Society, around 50% of women experience vaginal dryness during or after menopause,  yet only a small number actually talk about it with their GP. Why? Because we’re British. We’d rather discuss the weather than our lady bits.

But dryness isn’t just about menopause,  it’s also about lifestyle. Central heating, long hot showers, harsh soaps, alcohol (sadly), and not drinking enough water all play their part. Your skin and your vagina both need hydration to stay happy. Think of them as your body’s two most honest communicators, they’ll tell you loud and clear when they’re feeling neglected!

Did you know that as the body’s largest organ, the skin starts to lose about 1% of its collagen every year after 25. So if your elbows suddenly resemble the Sahara, it’s not your imagination, it’s biology.

Here’s the good news. Dryness doesn’t have to be your new normal. For your skin, think moisture, moisture, moisture! Swap foaming cleansers for creamy ones and use body oils after a shower while your skin’s still damp.

And for that dryness? Forget the embarrassment and embrace the options. Lubricants, vaginal moisturisers, and oestrogen creams can work wonders, and you can even buy many of them over the counter these days. No more awkward pharmacy moments.

There’s something empowering about reclaiming your body and your comfort. Because you deserve to feel fabulous from head to toe and everywhere in between.

If you take away one thing from this chat, let it be this: dryness doesn’t mean you’re past your prime, it means your body’s asking for a little extra TLC. So drink the water. Buy the good moisturiser. Talk to your doctor. And never, ever feel embarrassed about keeping every part of you thriving. Because being a woman over 50 isn’t about fading, it’s about flourishing, in full, radiant, hydrated glory.

Here’s 5 Practical Ways to Banish Dryness From Top to Bottom

  • Sip Smart: Aim for at least 5–2 litres of water a day. Add cucumber, mint, or lemon if you get bored, your skin (and everything else) will thank you.
  • Oil Up: Apply body oil straight after your shower, it locks in moisture better than most lotions. Think luxury, not effort.
  • Love Your Lady Bits: Vaginal moisturisers aren’t just for when things feel uncomfortable, they’re part of your self-care routine. Look for products with hyaluronic acid or vitamin E.
  • Turn Down the Heat: Long, scalding baths may feel heavenly, but they strip natural oils. Go warm, not boiling.
  • Eat the Glow: Omega-3 rich foods like salmon, walnuts, and flaxseeds keep your skin supple from the inside out.

Remember, you’re not drying up, you’re evolving. A little care, a little laughter, and a lot of hydration can make all the difference. So let’s normalise the conversation, top up our water bottles, and keep glowing, everywhere.
