Intergenerational Wisdom: Learning from Younger Generations While Sharing Our Stories
Sep 08, 2026
I was scrolling through Instagram the other day and as you know from my earlier blog post I am conscientiously practising ‘me-time’ and purposefully scheduling my intake and output of social media posts otherwise the whole thing can turn into frenzy of words, pictures, emojis and some! Anyway, I came across an hilarious post. A young woman was poking fun at how her mum tries to use emojis – picture a dancing woman followed by a ‘see no evil’ monkey! It got me thinking: isn’t it funny how much we can learn from younger generations? I mean, who else is going to teach us the difference between a “clap-back” and a “snapback”?
But seriously, while we're giggling at their TikToks and learning how to use new apps, there's something magical happening. We're not just learning from them; we're teaching them too. It’s a two-way street, and that’s the beauty of intergenerational connections.
You might be thinking: "What could I possibly learn from someone young enough to be my grandchild?" But what’s fascinating is that studies have shown that people who engage with younger generations tend to be happier and healthier. Yes, you read that right! A bit of TikTok can be good for your soul.
Let's talk about mentorship. It’s a word we often associate with passing down our life stories, wisdom, and those well-earned life lessons. And while that is incredibly valuable, it’s also important to change the narrative. We can learn just as much from these younger women as they can learn from us. Have you ever watched a young woman navigate a work-life balance while juggling side hustles, social causes, and self-care Sundays? It’s like watching a superhero in action! You see, younger generations are redefining what it means to be successful, independent, and fearless. They're challenging norms, speaking up for equality, and bringing fresh perspectives that we can learn from. It’s not just about how to use a new gadget or slang (although that does come in handy!). It’s about absorbing their fearless approach to life and reminding ourselves that ageing is an adventure, not a deadline.
At the same time, we have so much to offer them. Our stories are rich with lessons in resilience, strength, and adaptability. We’ve lived through history, faced adversities, and overcome obstacles that would leave some young ones scratching their heads. By sharing our experiences, we can offer them guidance and a sense of community that only comes with age and wisdom.
Imagine a space where young women teach us how to pivot careers in the digital age, and we show them how to navigate challenges with grace. A place where we share tips on self-care that actually works (because let’s be real, avocado masks aren’t the miracle cure) while learning about new wellness trends. We become a community where age isn’t a barrier but a bridge.
Remember, Maya Angelou once said, “I am convinced that most people do not grow up...we marry and dare to have children and call that growing up. I think what we do is mostly grow old.” And that’s okay! But what if, through intergenerational connections, we could do both? Grow up and grow old gracefully, joyfully, and most importantly, together.
So, the next time your niece or daughter rolls her eyes at your Facebook post or sends you a meme you don’t understand, smile and embrace the opportunity. It's a chance to learn, to laugh, and to teach. Let’s bridge the gap, share our stories, and continue growing no matter what stage of life we’re in.
In the end, the secret to empowered ageing is simple: keep an open heart and an open mind. Let’s make this a two-way street of wisdom, shall we?
