Hormonal Health: It’s Not Just In Your Head – It’s In Your Hormones!

Let’s start with a little truth bomb:

Hormonal health doesn’t get the attention it deserves. For many of us, it’s been a quiet struggle, something we were told to just get on with. We’ve powered through painful periods, brushed off mood swings, and made endless excuses for our exhaustion. But here’s the truth: what we’ve often been told is “just part of being a woman” can be something much more serious, and it’s time we talked about it openly.

Hormonal shifts affect every stage of our lives from our first period to our last, and every bumpy chapter in between. Whether it’s irregular cycles that seem to follow no rhyme or reason, the hidden burden of PCOS or endometriosis, or the emotional and physical toll of menopause, it’s all part of a bigger picture that deserves more understanding, not less.

PMS: Not Just a Mood

You know that feeling when your jeans are suddenly tight, your patience is paper-thin, and the world seems a bit... extra? That could be PMS.

Premenstrual Syndrome affects up to 90% of women. Yes, ninety percent. But for some, it's not just bloating and mood swings, it’s full-on rage, crushing fatigue, or crying because you dropped a spoon.

And then there’s irregular periods or heavy bleeding which can leave you planning your social life around whether or not you can wear white trousers.

PCOS: The Silent Disrupter

Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. PCOS affects 1 in 10 women in the UK, and it messes with everything from your skin and weight to your ability to have children. It’s a hormonal imbalance that can cause irregular periods, facial hair growth, acne, and more.

Oh, and just to add salt to the wound, it’s often missed or misdiagnosed. Many women don’t find out until they’re trying to conceive or start having unexplained symptoms that no one takes seriously.

Endometriosis: The Pain That’s Ignored

Endometriosis is when tissue similar to the lining of your womb grows outside your uterus. It causes crippling pain, fatigue, and sometimes infertility.

On average, it takes 7.5 years to get diagnosed. Yes, SEVEN. That’s nearly a decade of being told, “It’s just bad cramps,” or “You’re exaggerating.”

You’re not.

Menopause: The Hot and Bothered Years

Then, when you think you’ve got the hang of it all, along comes menopause. The final hormonal hurrah.

Hot flushes that could roast a chicken. Mood swings that make you question everything. Sleep problems that turn you into a zombie.

And let’s not even talk about vaginal dryness (because no one does, but we should). The hormonal changes in perimenopause and menopause are massive, and they can affect your mental health just as much as your physical wellbeing.

Here's a fascinating fact for you: by 2025, over 1 billion women worldwide will be experiencing menopause. That’s a billion of us sweating, crying, and wondering why we walked into the kitchen.

It’s Not Just You

Honestly? If any of this resonates, you’re not alone. Hormonal health isn’t about being “moody” or “too emotional.” It’s a complex, real, and often misunderstood part of being a woman.

As the wise Maya Angelou once said:

“Each time a woman stands up for herself, she stands up for all women.”

So let's talk. Let's support each other. Let’s stop whispering “period” like it's a dirty word.

What You Can Do:

Track your symptoms. Apps or good old pen and paper, just note what’s happening and when.

Talk to your GP. Push for answers. You deserve to be heard.

Find your tribe. Whether it's a support group or a WhatsApp chat with your girls, don’t go through it solo.

Be kind to yourself. Hormones mess with your body and your mind. Rest, hydrate, and be gentle.

Remember….  You're not broken. You're not too much. You're a woman navigating a hormonal rollercoaster with strength and sass.

Share this with a friend who's ever cried at a dog food advert. She’ll get it!
