Healthy Ageing
Jun 30, 2026
I celebrated my birthday recently… and I’m not going to lie, I did a little boogie in the mirror. Okay, a full-on boogie with my slippers on. Why? Because every year I grow older is a year I grow bolder, wiser, and apparently, more curious about collagen!
But let’s be honest. While ageing is a gift (and it truly is), it also comes with its own surprises. Like walking into a room and completely forgetting why you’re there. Or suddenly needing reading glasses to read a text from your partner. I call it “midlife magic” a trick your brain plays on you without warning.
The Memory Mystery
Here’s the thing no one warned us about: Women are more likely than men to develop Alzheimer’s and other types of dementia. In fact, two-thirds of Alzheimer’s patients in the UK are women. Hormonal shifts after menopause can affect brain health in big ways.
But it’s not all doom and gloom. You can protect that beautiful brain of yours. Regular exercise, brain-boosting foods (oily fish and berries), social connection, and even a good belly laugh can literally help preserve memory. So yes, chatting with your girlfriends over wine does count as therapy.
Move It or Lose It
One thing I’ve learned is that muscle mass doesn’t hang about. After 30, we start losing 3-8% of it every decade. And after 50? It speeds up. The key? Movement.
Now, I’m not saying you need to run a marathon but strength training, walking, Pilates, yoga, anything that gets your body moving, is your best friend. Especially for us women, keeping our mobility means keeping our independence. And I don’t know about you, but I plan to be strutting around in my 80s with my handbag and hips intact.
Did you know that resistance training twice a week can reduce the risk of mobility issues by 30% in women over 50. That’s right, two hours a week and your knees will thank you.
Skin Deep… and Then Some
Let’s talk skin and hair, shall we? Because the struggle is real.
With age, our collagen production evaporates like wine at a girls' night in, skin gets drier, and hair may thin or grey. But it doesn’t mean we have to accept dullness as the new normal. Hydration, healthy fats, vitamins (especially A, C, D and E), and a consistent skincare routine go a long way.
Oh, and don’t sleep on your SPF just because it’s cloudy. UV rays don’t care what month it is. And for us melanin-rich beauties, while we may not burn easily, we’re still vulnerable to sun damage and hyperpigmentation.
Also, silk pillowcases. Trust me. They’re not just bougie. They’re better for skin and hair, reducing friction and helping you wake up looking less like a raisin and more like the queen you are.
You’re Not Ageing, You’re Evolving
Healthy ageing isn’t about trying to look 25 again. It’s about feeling strong, clear, and confident. It’s about choosing foods that nourish you, moving your body with love, staying connected, and being kind to yourself, especially on the days when you need two cups of coffee before you can even function.
And it’s about redefining what getting older looks like. We are not fading into the background. We’re just getting started.
So here’s to more birthdays, better memory stronger muscles, glowing skin, and laughing until your belly hurts.
We’re thriving…. Not ageing.
